It’s a story about Ludlow family who lived in a ranch. In the woods, there lived a family consisting of a father and three sons and an Indian family. They raised livestock such cows, horses, hens, etc. The name of the father was William Ludlow and those of the three sons were Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel. When he was young, Tristan was special and different.

He was so wild that he once tried to kill the bear. After all the sons have grown up, Samuel who left the house to study comes back with his beautiful fiancée, Susannah. While Samuel introduces her to the family, all his brothers, Alfred and Tristan, also fall in love with her. After a few days, Samuel insists his idea to participate in the war and Tristan and Alfred follow him to protect him. Unfortunately, although Tristan tries his best to save Samuel, Samuel who fought excessively dies by the guns of enemies. Alfred and Tristan come back from the war and Susannah who fell in love with Tristan at first sight marries Tristan. Alfred couldn’t bear it, so he leaves home and go to the city. Tristan living with Susannah suffers from the pain about Samuel. Eventually, he gets struck with the madness and leave the house to wander. Susannah tries to wait for him. However, getting the letter that says “Marry another.” from Tristan, Susannah also leaves the house and marries Alfred. Several years later, Tristan who found his calmness comes back to home and marries Isabel, the daughter of the Indian. Tristan and Isabel get to have two babies, a son and a daughter. The four families live a happy life.
